Lacuna Coil – Sleepless Empire

If you know Lacuna Coil, you’ll know that every album in their storied career is more than just sound—it’s a richly textured soundtrack to a moment in time. With Sleepless Empire, that place is dark, cinematic, and unmistakably true to the qualities that have made the band a celebrated force in heavy music.

According to founding songwriter Marco “Maki” Coti Zelati, the real creative spark for Sleepless Empire began with the release of Comalies XX in 2022, a reimagining of their landmark 2002 record. “It was more than an epic and rapturously received reinvention,” he explains. “It aligned the past, the present, and the future of Lacuna Coil as we take our first steps into the fourth decade of our career.”

Maki adds, “I never get stuck in the past. Sure, I still love Type O Negative and Paradise Lost, but I also love soundtracks—big orchestral stuff like Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, or John Williams. If people had a chance to listen to Sleepless Empire without the voice, guitars or drums, it’d be a soundtrack because it’s very cinematic. I grew up watching movies all day long with my father—there was this massive culture of movies and soundtracks, from Friday the 13th to Halloween, and in Italy, Goblin’s incredible scores for Profondo Rosso and Suspiria.”

From the colossal refrains of opener The Siege to the wickedly catchy I Wish You Were Dead and the anthemic title track, the album radiates confidence and packs surprises. Among them: guest appearances by Ash Costello of New Years Day on In The Mean Time and Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe on Hosting the Shadow.

Founding vocalist Andrea Ferro recalls, “We met Randy when we did Ozzfest in 2004. We became friends and always stayed in touch. Finally doing a collab with him was both natural and a huge honor—he’s really like family to us.” As for Costello, Ferro explains, “We were searching for that perfect ‘rock’ voice—not too clean or symphonic but something with fire in it. She had exactly what we needed, and we loved what she did. It’s absolutely perfect.”

The edge of Sleepless Empire comes not only from these collaborations but also from Lacuna Coil’s ability to evolve. Ferro notes, “Our sound is dark because it reflects the society we’re living in—it’s a portrait of our times. We’re from a generation that remembers the analog world but lives in the digital one. We’ve witnessed that change, and that’s the Sleepless Empire. Everyone is always on their phone, always scrolling, never stopping.”

Cristina Scabbia agrees, tying the album’s urgency to a renewed spark after the pandemic: “Before Comalies XX we literally stopped creating. Everything was so negative we didn’t want to connect to anything. In some way, it was like a comeback for us—it renewed our love of songwriting. We love singles, but we like a whole record that tells a story, one that captures a moment in time.”

That philosophy is present throughout Sleepless Empire. The deluxe box set even includes an Oracle divination game hidden in the booklet, while the artwork by Neapolitan illustrator Roberto Toderico reflects the band’s devotion to authenticity. “I met Roberto at a comic convention,” Scabbia says. “I love his work because it’s completely handmade. People pretend that AI is creating something new, but I disagree. Music, painting, drawing—it comes from inside you. That’s true creativity.”

It’s this perspective that gives Sleepless Empire its timely yet timeless spirit. More than an album, it’s a bold statement from a band at ease with their past yet defiantly moving forward.
